Deacon Steve Bauer grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, attended Sacred Heart Elementary, and St. Joseph High School. He went to the Air Force Academy and became an Air Force Navigator. He was stationed in Tacoma, WA and flew to 37 countries on 4 continents. After the Air Force, he designed navigation systems for the rest of his career. He coached and refereed soccer, taught High School religious education, led Bible studies, and was ordained a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Dubuque on July 20, 2019. Deacon Steve met his wife, Valerie, across avolleyball net in Long Beach, CA. Valerie was raised in Long Beach and worked as a nurse in varioussettings. They have also lived in Boston, Kansas City, MO, and 26 years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Most of them live in the Kansas City area along with Steve’s brother and 2 sisters. They have 2 small white Bolognese dogs name Regina and Coeli. Fun Fact: On their wedding day on January 2, 1982, Steve carted Valerie around in a ceremonial wheelbarrow ride. They feel very fortunate and blessed to bepart of St. Pius X parish.
